Frequently Asked Questions
A White Card does not have an expiry date. However, it becomes invalid if you have not carried out construction work for two consecutive years or more. If this happens, you’ll need to complete the training again before returning to site.
To obtain a White Card, you must successfully complete the nationally recognised unit CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry through a Registered Training Organisation. Once completed, the application is lodged with the relevant WorkSafe authority.
You won’t be allowed to work on a construction site without a valid White Card. Employers are required to check your eligibility before you start work and will refuse site access if you cannot provide proof of training. Allowing work to proceed without a White Card is a breach of Work Health and Safety laws and can lead to significant fines for both employers and individuals.
The term “Blue Card” is sometimes used to refer to former Queensland and Western Australia construction induction cards, which have since been replaced by the nationally recognised White Card.
In Queensland, a Blue Card now refers to a separate requirement for working with children, which is unrelated to construction. Older construction Blue Cards issued before the change may still be valid, depending on work history.
If your Blue Card becomes lost, damaged or destroyed, it can’t be replaced. You’ll need to contact an RTO and complete the current general construction induction training course and obtain a White Card.
